I've seen a large amount of these extra tree DDRs slabbed by PCGS on ebay recently, both P and D mints and many different DDR listings.

I thought it was very interesting to see a PCGS DDR attribution without an FS number assigned to it.

Try searching "Minnesota extra tree" on ebay and many PCGS graded examples will pop up. Below is an example:

I never thought that PCGS would certify a variety not listed in the CPG without a "minor variety" label. Thoughts?

Wow that is quite strange. I've never seen something like this before.

Thanks for showing us! I find this very interesting, not sure why PCGS would slab these.

Somebody probably did a series of bulk submissions, but declined to pay the variety attribution (per coin) fee.

edit to add:

Interesting, the coin# doesn't appear in the general search

https://www.PCGS.com/PCGSnolookup

But does appear on the cert page

I think they did pay the variety attribution fee. The slabs correctly list the variety, but the varieties themselves are not CPG listed. I haven't known the Major TPG to slab a variety absent from the CPG, which is why this is so interesting.

PCGS does, or did, attribute and label any Minnesota DDR by DDR-### if you pay the variety fee.

I don't know exactly what to call it, but the Minnesota quarters were the first coins to have such an abundance of stronger doubled dies and be widely popular at release. PCGS recognized that and offered to grade and label these varieties as the widespread popularity of the new discoveries would surely generate some revenue for the company. The 2005 OIV nickels and the 2015 Homestead quarters are two other coins that come to mind that had a similar frenzy.

Wow I had no idea they were recognized, especially without a minor variety label. Thanks for clearing it up Tanman!
