A friend of mine has a US quarter and asked me if I could identify it for him. As I know very little about coins of the United States, I figured this would be the best place to ask. The obverse has the head of George Washington with dates 1776-1976 underneath and the reverse has a drummer and a flame surrounded with stars. Any help determining what he has would be greatly appreciated.

Technically, it was a two year issue with a set date- the bicentennial issues were minted in 1975 and 1976 with the dual date of 1776-1976. The quarters are very common with almost 1.7 billion business strikes minted.

Whats also kind of interesting was this was the only major design change to the reverse and obverse design of the quarter in a span of seventy years before the commerative Statehood Quarters came out. You will find bicentennial quarters in circulation over here in the states but they are commonly hoarded for their uniqueness.

The united states also had a bicentennial 50 cent piece and dollar coin as well, something I found out only about 14 months ago when I started collecting.

And for all the reasons stated above, their value is not much more than face.

if you will click on my 7070 album link in my sig line you can scroll down and see all 3 Bicentennial coins. As was already said the quarters arean't worth anything more than face value and we still find allot of them in change because so many was minted and allot were hoarded also because of the design change so they can be found in change in pretty good condition
