i recently found a 1971 - S Jefferson nickel, in a roll of used nickels. if graded it would probably be +/- XF40. the only thing unusual is that the 71-S is a proof coin. obviously the coin value sources do NOT show proof coin values in worn condition. I'm not really even sure what to do with this coin. opinions would be appreciated.

Most folks that find proofs in circulation keep them as a novelty. Being impaired like this makes them worth little to nothing over face value. I just wouldn't have the heart to send a proof back into the cruel world...

I think it's a keeper!

It might not be in the best shape, but still only cost you five cents! Like Ratio, I could not just spend it. My wife received a proof Delaware quarter in change and I proudly keep it in one of my miscellaneous albums!

Fifty years of looking and I still have never found a proof coin in circulation.

I found a proof dime in change last year. I also keep it in a misc. album.

This year, I got a 2006 Clad Proof Dime in my change (from McDonald's!), and a 1956 Proof Dime from a roll I bought at a grocery store service counter. I got a 1968-S Cent in change that I highly suspect is a Proof. Even with the wear, it still has a prooflike 'shine' on the flat surfaces (it looks like my 1966 SMS Cent, except with some wear.) and it still has some 'red' and 'cartwheel' (which it wouldn't if it was cleaned). One of my co-workers got a Clad Idaho Proof Quarter in change, and he asked me what exactly it was! That coin got a little wear from its circulation time, but my 2006 Clad Dime is in great shape. Funny thing is, I don't normally 'collect' Clad Proofs, but I got a 1968-to-2008 Clad Proof "S" Dime Set for my last birthday. This 'found' 2006-S is in fact the first Clad Proof Dime I've owned (not counting my 1966 SMS Dime, and I got the 2006-S before my birthday, so I had it before I received the '68-'08 "S" Dime Set as a gift). Well, at least my family has enough sense/taste to not buy me altered State Quarters on HSN! (Family Member) presumably looked at my collection and saw no Clad Dimes, so at least the Set was something I didn't have.

I as others have mentioned would keep it. I have found 3 proof nickels, 2 while CRH and one as change at a Boston Market.
I found 2 proof halves hunting for silver.

correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't San Fransisco mint uncirculated examples of the Jefferson nickel as well as proof versions both with the S mint mark in 1971 ? according to the mint set they did .

Nope, San Francisco stopped minting nickels for circulation after 1970.

Why not consider it the start of your "impaired proofs from circulation" collection? Every coin tells a story. An impaired proof tells a different story than most. Your nickel was made to high standards, and intended to go to a coin collector. Somehow, it ended up in circulation, a tiny artwork participating in everyday commerce. Then it was found by you, one of the comparatively few people who recognizes it on sight for what it was intended to be. Except for the Sacagawea dollar that I won in a CCF contest (thanks acidic1!), all five of my proof coins were pulled from circulation. Impaired modern proofs manage to be common and rare at the same time. How long will it be before you find another?

I always wondered why there isn't like a PR-40 grade....at least I've never seen one for a circulated proof. All proof grades I've seen are PR60-70.

Sure, PR40s exist. The problem is that most impaired proofs aren't worth squat unless you are talking early 20th century or 19th century material. Heritage has sold over 1800 imparied proofs including this 1856 PR40 Flying Eagle
