This coin looks to be a weak strike, with the rims missing or shallow and the deepest areas of the portrait flat and lacking detail. It also show many areas of struck through debris on the obverse and reverse. The coin shows some of the strongest Progressive Indirect Design Transfer or "Ghosting" of the devices that I've seen on any coin, showing on both the obverse and reverse of the coin.

The coin has many deep areas of strike through in the letters of IGWT and a few in LIBERTY. The profile of Jefferson has a trench that's struck through showing from the hairline to the throat. The steps of the Monticello show an additional area that was struck through with a few other areas in the fields.

Please comment and let me know if you think the descriptions are accurate. Also let me know if you see anything I may have missed.

Thanks for checking out my post!

I posted this coin last year, but the images used then did not show how strong the ghosting effect on the coin. A simple change in the lighting angle can make a huge difference!

Love this coin.
I see all the areas you mention but what is the raised area on the field, to the left of the collar?

What is that arrow under the w in "we"? This coin is a trip. A lam by the hair?

Agree with struck through at the steps, maybe the same near WE on the obverse. Agree weak strike at the highest obverse points, such as Jefferson's ear and cheek. That's fairly common on mid 20th century nickels. I think the rest of the anomalies are due to worn dies, something too often seen on nickels dated 1953, 54, and 55.

I did a Photoshop image to help identify the depressed areas. It shows all of the struck through areas in purple and includes the area in front of Jefferson's collar and the "arrow" shape at the base of the W. That shape along with the area between the D and W are the deepest of the stuck through areas.
