Hello,

I would like to ask if someone can confirm that this coin:

Confirm-My-Own-Identification-Of-A-Roman-Coin

is the following:

Quote:

Ref Gordian III Aureus, RIC 23, Cohen 195
Gordian III AV Aureus. 239 AD. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right / P M TR P II COS P P, Providentia standing left holding globe & transverse scepter. Cohen 195.

Another question I have is: how to clean up the coin without any damages or what kind of person or service I have to search for to get it done?

Thank you in advance.

The atreibution is correct, but unfortunately the coin is not genuine. Previously I had thought Gordian III denarii to be too common to bother making a fake of, but I have been seeing a lot more of these fakes in the past couple of years.

Compare the hair, eye, and nose details to a genuine one:

From the fake reports. Mentions the Haskovo I studio, which I take it means the Bulgarian School. Slavey Petrov or his students, I guess?

I guess I'll state the obvious, an Aureus is gold. Your coin, unfortunately looks to be made of another metal entirely. However, it may be silver as it looks kind of toned. Sorry for the bad news, but it happens to the best of us.

I guess I'll put my Gordian pic up for comparison.

Sorry, but I agree with the other replies, not a genuine example.
