I would like to ask if someone can confirm that this coin:
is the following:
Quote:
Ref Gordian III Aureus, RIC 23, Cohen 195 Gordian III AV Aureus. 239 AD. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, laureate, draped & cuirassed bust right / P M TR P II COS P P, Providentia standing left holding globe & transverse scepter. Cohen 195.
The atreibution is correct, but unfortunately the coin is not genuine. Previously I had thought Gordian III denarii to be too common to bother making a fake of, but I have been seeing a lot more of these fakes in the past couple of years.
Compare the hair, eye, and nose details to a genuine one:
I guess I'll state the obvious, an Aureus is gold. Your coin, unfortunately looks to be made of another metal entirely. However, it may be silver as it looks kind of toned. Sorry for the bad news, but it happens to the best of us.
I guess I'll put my Gordian pic up for comparison.
