Hello All,

I recently inherited 16 British gold coins for which I know nothing about. I have supplied photos below of 8 of these coins. Does anyone know anything about these? Are they worth anything?

Coin 1 - Front Side (camera made it green accidentally)

Nice Coins! Of course they are worth something, they are gold. haha But they do have numismatic value as well. In order to have a better idea of the denomination of a few of these, we will need measurements of the diameter.

1.That is an 1882 sovereign minted in Melbourne, Australia. It grades about Extra Fine

2. 1884 Sovereign also minted in Melbourne, Australia

3. 1872 Sovereign of the Melbourne Mint

4. 1875 Sovereign also of the same mint

5. Either a sovereign or half sovereign based upon the diameter. Minted in England (I believe that there is the number 61 beneath the coat of arms on the reverse

6. 1898 Sovereign or half sovereign also minted in England.

7. 1875 sovereign or half sovereign. Minted in England and also appears to have a number beneath the coat of arms.

8. That is a nice Uncirculated 1911 sovereign or half sovereign minted in England.

I would love to see the other 8 coins!

here mccraig!

Wow...great info! I also noticed the Melbourne mint mark.
I suppose I could move this to the Australia forum, but it's a tossup, lol

Not really a tossup--the Commonwealth of Australia was not formed until 1901--that and the fact that there are British mint coins would argue for remaining GB/UK. My 2 cents.

Sure thing! Just glad to help out.

These values are according to my 4th edition Standard Catalog (2004), So the values may be a tad outdated due to higher bullion values these days.

1. The 1882 Melbourne Sovereign in Extra Fine is worth $125

2 The 1884 Melbourne Sovereign in EF is worth about $125

3 the 1872 Great Britain Sovereign in EF is worth around $150

4. The 1874 Melbourne Sovereign in EF is worth $175

5. The 1876 Great Britain Half Sovereign in EF is worth about $175

6. The 1898 Great Britain Half Sovereign in Very Fine (though the side with queen Victoria looks a bit weak and therefore may be approaching Fine on that side) is worth around $60 (But the bullion value may be worth more than this numismatic value).

7. The 1875 Great Britain Half Sovereign in EF is worth $225

8. THe 1911 Great Britain Half Sovereign in Brilliant Uncirculated is worth $100

G'day,
a full sovereign -
Weight: 7.98 grams.
Alloy: 22 carat gold = 0.917 parts per 1000.
Actual gold content = 7.315 grams or 0.2354 troy ounces.
a half-sov is in proportion.

according to CCF "Spot Prices" link (near top, on left of this screen, about 10 rows down):
gold is us$801.60; or AUD$1267.97

therefore, the "intrinsic" value of any sov, apart from its numismatic value, is -
us$190.82
or AUD $298.48

quote: "... I could move this to the Australia forum, but it's a tossup, ..."
- in amplification of HABIB's response:
the Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth mints were branches of The Royal Mint in London; so the sovs are regarded as "Imperial" rather than "Australian" coinage.
That said, they were legal tender here, and both catalogues of Oz Coins, Renniks & Maccas's, list them.
All of which supports Kurt's conclusion "it's a tossup, ..."

and the larger coin or #2 and #3 coins are 2.2 cm wide? hope I measured it correctly.

Well first of all, you shouldn't sell these because they're inherited. They're a part of your family!

Plus, I don't think you should gold right now in the recession unless you really need the money. After this blows over, gold will return to 1000 for sure or even higher.

But if you're selling now, I can tell you people are offering around 250 each, not the spot of 190.

wd1040- yeah, I totally agree that these coins should stay in the family.

Also, as it has been pointed out, yeah, the values I listed were just those of the numismatic value. As is often the case with circulated gold, the bullion value is even higher.

hey guys thanx for all your responses. I should note that my intentions on knowing the value is not for selling them but for insurance and just pure knowledge base. I would also like to display them in some manner
