NGC - Happy Throwback Thursday! This Silver Drachm was issued circa 88-84 BC in Caria, which was under the control of the Island of Rhodes at the time. I visited Rhodes in 2016 and the last two photos are ones I took when I was there. They feature twin columns with deer atop them. These mark the location of each leg of the so-called "Colossus of Rhodes" which supposedly straddled the harbor entrance. While it is likely that this version of the Colossus did not actually exist, the statue certainly did, just likely on solid land. It was some 70 cubits tall, or 108 feet. The statue was of the Greek Sun-god Helios, who happens to be featured on the obverse of this coin! This lovely piece graded NGC MS and earned a 5/5 for strike and a 4/5 for surfaces.
