Heritage Auctions - The only example of this great baseball ad note from this issuer that we have been able to offer is presented again tonight. When we sold it three years ago, we said,"Both an incredible Colorado and baseball note that is very attractive and one that certainly earned its third party grade. This example has the highest grade that we can recall for one of these baseball notes that were used as an advertising medium for several, far flung, small businesses across the nation during the late 1880s.

The note itself exhibits wonderful color with its white paper and green ink and the folds are light. The year of "1887" is the underprint at center. The portrait at left is of the president of the Chicago White Stockings (today's Chicago Cubs) A(lbert) G. Spaulding and the vignette at right is of a batter at the plate. The back has a dozen portraits of members of the team and they include the likes of pitcher John Clarkson, catcher Tom Daly, infielder Cap Anson, and outfielders Jimmy Ryan and Billy Sunday. The White Stockings played 121 games during the season. They won 71 and lost 50, which was good enough for third place. However, the winning bidder of this great note will be in first place."
