If the Mint really wanted to make these coins non-collectable, or at least less attractive to collectors, they should remove the date and continue to strike them, undated, for the next decade. They should also scrap their plans to use a bunch of different colours. Collectors will always want to collect the "different things", so reducing the number of different things to collect will reduce the number collected.

But they won't - because the Mint doesn't rally care what happens to coins once they're issued and out in circulation. And, since each coin is still profitable to make, the more they need to make, the more profit the mint generates for the government. Coins removed from circulation by hoarders and collectors are going to need to be replaced, and replacing coins is profitable. So they're not going to really do anything to discourage that.

... that's a great idea Sap but I'm not sure what our definition of legal tender is in regards to coins? Maybe a year date is compulsory?

Maybe you could freeze the date like we did in the mid-1960s to help prevent coin hoarding. Everyone here knows you cannot go long without seeing a 1964 nickel.

Like North Korea does. So Kim Jong-un does have the odd good idea.

Sounds as though the 'Donation Dollar' campaign wasn't as well planned as it should have been.
Just saw a story on the TV regarding this and it appears that the 'name shaming' is already beginning! ... I'm sure that's there's more to come!

Wrong, but not surprising.
It was Saatchi who was responsible for the $180 million dollar flop "Where the B%#&)y h%%l are you?" advertising campaign. Will the gov departments never learn? I guess not when it's someone elses money they are wasting.

Also it's odd that I only heard about it through CCF. Given I don't watch any free to air (except for a bit of Le Tour and the odd sports game) and I know most young-uns don't watch any free to air I wonder where they placed the advertising? No-one I've spoken to has heard of the new coin. At $62,000 for one week or day they didn't target their campaign very well.

I only saw the advert once and that's only because it was during a movie that I had recorded.

Governments haha, 400K for 2 year ad campaign coins that were meant to be donated (assuming 4 million first year of colour $1 coin mintage) will not work, they should have done a study for efficiency sake and paid another 2 Million hahah , how about like Rudd when you send out the checks you also send the dollar coin :D.

We watch a lot of prime time TV in our household and nobody recalls seeing any advertising re the Dollar Donation coin ... maybe it was in the printed media that nobody takes the time to read anymore?

I did a few quick goggle searches and nothing comes up before the beginning of this month which is a little odd!

Maybe it was donated to his coin collecting charity?
Hopefully it wasn't stuck to a letter from some prince requesting help (and some money and bank details) to access his royal fortune!!

The irony is I still haven't seen one in Oz, yet they are already arriving on Uncle Sams shores.

They've arrived in SEQ...

Just picked up a lazy $1000 in $1 coins to noodle over the weekend after I've finished sorting a 10kg bag of foreign coins. There are a couple of donation dollars in the bag. Was really tempted to open the bag and take some pics but I knew if that happened I would end up noodling the $1 coins while the bulk foreign coins remained on the dining table all weekend!
