Hi everyone

Fifth grade point F-12

I thought it would be interesting to run a series of threads on grading criteria and what you may use to help determine the grades of circulated Lincoln cents , the object is to describe as close as possible how you would determine a grade of F-12 , pictures are welcome as illustrations along with how you arrived at the grade of F-12.

this will be a continuing series of posts with threads for all grade points from G-4 to AU-58 ,, Please keep each thread pure to the topic !

Hey Metalman:

Should we go ahead with F12 or wait for VG10?

I'm willing to wait but with the Thanksgiving turkey thawing in sink, I'd like to know tonight which way we're headed.

Thats ok Thad , it get more difficult to grade under net standards in the higher grades,by the way I skipped VG-10 and went to F-12 based on your suggestion in the other thread I thought you did not want to do the intermediates .

participation was a little low anyway to get a well rounded variety of opinions , I may pick this up again at another time .

F-12

Nice brown color, but it may be a little uneven. A couple of minor spots are acceptable. Rims worn some but free of distracting hits.

Obverse: Check and jaw merged, but there should be a slight differentiation (outline of cheek), hair above ear worn slightly. The ear should have some detail and not be completely smooth. Shoulder, coat lapel, and bow tie show some wear, but details present.

Reverse: 60-70% of the lines show on the wheatheads with many complete, but worn. Some of the lines may be completely obliterated in areas. The outlines of the wheat grains are visable. All the letters of the moto' are clear and easily readable.
