I've been buying a bunch of counterfeits for my collection lately and this was one of them. Just posting to remind folks to be careful what you buy.

While this coin has a lot of problems noting it as a counterfeit, one key marker that is easy to spot is the die chip on the inside of the left wheat. This marker can be found on a number of fake Lincoln wheat cents (Chinese made) and is worth learning since while they changed to obverse to various valuable dates, they always used this reverse die and so many fakes can be spotted by just knowing this one die chip.

I've seen better, and way worse. Not convincing in the slightest to a informed collector, but would nail a novice

The most glaringly obvious giveaway (to my eyes) is the strike on TRUST

That is a poor examble of the fake. They do make much more convincing one using this rev. And this rev was used on many different date and mint combinations, not just the SVDB fakes And since the others don't have the VDB they apparently had a hub with that raised "chip" on it and made several different rev dies.

hello tropicalbats

i know nothing about counterfeits.

what about all the pitting around the coin? could that be considered a characteristic of casting?

EDIT: inner edge of coin

thanks

I believe the VDB is in the correct position it's supposed to be closer to the left wheat . Not sure of the dots on that coin ,can't really see if they are in the correct position . The B is correct with the middle line of B facing up from left to right .

LoM, yes the pitting is characteristic of a cast coin (and it's 3.4g). That said, the reverse is found across a bunch of dates on counterfeits, so likely the mold was made from the same reverse "die" as many other fake coins.

Also the crossbar of the B in V.D.B. is not correct, as it is not angled as on a real coin.

Eventually I plan to put up a page on Lincoln counterfeits, and would go over all the problems, but mostly here just reminding folks to look for that reverse die marker as it can easily be seen on many counterfeits, especially ones better made than this one.

I stand corrected as I see in your blow up photo .
