Poll Question
It probably will not happen but, I would like to see a new "old style" Buffalo nickel. Is it a good idea?feasible?would it cause confusion? I think it would be neat. Would it work for you?

By old style do you mean Indian obverse and bison reverse? That would work for me. One coin spends pretty much like another.

It's been done. Anything new, while it may contain elements previously used, needs to be distinct. Of course, they are reusing the St Gaudens on gold.

Make the date incused, though. Then it wouldn't wear off so quickly.

I've made up my mind to limit my collecting to adding yearly updates to the Lincolns, Jeffersons, Roosevelts and Washingtons I collect now. Any major change in design will not see the start of a new series. A return to the Indian/Bison design would mean the end of my collecting Nickels. Ditto Quarters after the US States & Territories at the end of 2009 unless the design reverts to the Washington/Eagle used pre-1999. I voted YES with this in mind meaning as long as the coin works in vending machines it works for me.

I am probably in agreement with FreezerBurn. I consider my 1938~2003 Jefferson nickel collection complete. I keep the Westward Journey and "Return to Monticello" Nickels in a separate album. So, it really does not matter to me if they were changed. I would still probably collect them though.

Is there anything in the works, or are the nickels going to be the regular jefferson variety forever

I've been thinking (since 2005) that the Westward Journey "Bison" Nickel should have been used for the 'regular' Nickel design. I wasn't happy to see the same old Monticello reverse stuck back on the Nickel in 2006! (they should have used Felix Schlag's original "art deco" Monticello reverse, if they have to appease some Virginia Senator! ) Quote: Topher:"Make the date incused, though. Then it wouldn't wear off so quickly." Also the "Five Cents" on the back, if the "Type 1" reverse (Buffalo on Mound) design was used. The reason why they didn't do that originally was most likely because of the bad reception given the 'incuse' Indian Head $2.50 and $5 gold coins of 1908-1929. Maybe the Fraser nickel could be a 2013 "100th anniversary" circulating commemorative design!
