Hi everyone! What are your thoughts on this south american 8 Reales from 1779?
(Weight is 26,8 g... which seems fine)

Thanks a lot!

nearly Fine. (British grading system)
I will keep my Sheldon grading for US coins. Probably not appropriate in this case anyway.

Charles 111 was an ugly looking individual. Spoils his coins.

Spanish milled Dollars are the most well known coins in circulating Australian Proclamation coinage. Important item in early Australian numismatic history, before the introduction of standard British Sterling currency in 1825.

Hi! Thanks for your replies!
I have read the fascinating threads about the Potosi broken castle issue where so many experienced and renowned forum members took part. A real pleasure to read and some posts I have also bookmarked for the precious information they have.

I understand that all samples containing the broken castle are suspect, and in fact I find the previous sample rather strange-looking.

I also found curious -to some extent- the sloppiness shown in the reverse die design (the weird contour of the shield, the curved column, the five-legged lion , etc.) but then I also found a matching reverse die coin which has been sold quite recently on Heritage auctions:
8-Reales-1779-Charles-III-Potosi-Mint

This one sold for more than $1.800- and was previously auctioned by Sedwick also for a high sum the year before.

And both reverses look like a perfect match:

8-Reales-1779-Charles-III-Potosi-Mint

However I still have lots of doubts about it...

Yes, that does seem to be a match for the reverse. Perhaps you can perform a specific gravity test and so add to our collective knowledge of these issues.

Hi jgenn! That would be great, but sadly I am not the owner.
However, I might be interested in making an offer for it and that's the reason why I posted in the community before making any commitments.
I owned many Potosi pieces but I am not quite sure about this one.

I will try to examine it in person. The seller has at least one other Potosi broken castle sample that I am aware of -in better grading- among many other colonial pieces.
