I have to live up to my user name and give you some good ones. The specimen finish on the 2013 is my favorite.

I can't seem to find the answer online, but is the 2013 Specimen dollar bronze-plated nickel or brass-plated steel? It looks so much different than the 2018 colorwise, but aren't they supposed to be the same composition since 2012?

Strictly speaking, this is an "asylum" of loons, not a gang. Or a "cry" or "water dance" are other collective nouns.....but back to coin collecting.

tripoli....have you been to the looniebin? . I was going to call sprue on that too. . Sprue, this coin comes from a set, this one. Here is the cards description. The finish looks like it's messing with you. I have a brass one here somewhere, No where near close. I'll find it tomorrow.

Quote: Strictly speaking, this is an "asylum" of loons, not a gang. You haven't met these loons. @loonielewy So the 2013 is bronze-plated nickel. That's good to know, but I thought that the composition was changed in 2012 to brass-plated steel. Did these sets retain the old composition or do I have something mixed up? It has a real pinkish copper look to it that is quite different from the brassy yellow of the others.

The security feature loons came out for circulation in 2012 as plated steel. A few 2012's have no security feature, and are nickel. 2013 forward, if you wanted a loon without the security, it had to come from a Specimen or a Proof set. This may have changed, but I lost interest in the sets and can't say when or if the loon has the security feature now in these sets.
