Team, Here are two (apparently) different 1820 CBH, O-104 Half Dollars. The rarity rating of this variety is R-4+. Please chime in with your observations. Take Care Ben Edited by Bonedigger 11/29/2008 1:24 pm

They are both the same coin (bag marks under the chin, etc). It just looks like you used different lighting conditions to photograph them. One with flat directional lighting (flash maybe?) and one with the hard light on the side reflecting back to the photo. You might find that if you use a directional (hard) light angled at 45 degrees next to the camera and a diffused light the same angle you will get a wonderful photograph.

That said, I'm a total noob with CBHs. Either flat lighting washed out the details of the left wing on the first coin, or what is the alternative? I also notice both coins have very similar marks between 50 and C. on the reverse: Also, the slight differences I see on star 2 must be also due to lighting, right?

Its apparent that the pictures are both of the same coin ,,or is it ?
the top coin looks cast and if thats the case then both these coins are fakes from the same casting .

Yep, the top picture was the Auction pic and the bottom one I took yesterday simply using a neon light. There is even some luster left on this baby. A poor photograph can really cover up, or wash out important details it seems.

amazing how lighting can play a difference. I like the 2nd pic as it shows much more detail and the coin looks much better in that pic.

I would have passed on the coin based on the picture , it sure looks like a washed out cast to me .

the second pic is much better. Also the second coin appears to be slightly BIGGER!

Lighting techniques can really make or break a coin. I can made my dull gold MS62 half eagles look great with the right lighting but I honestly would have to list it as photo better than real life It seems to be the other way round too Hope you got a great deal. I hate grading by photographs its so hard to see what the coin really looks like
