I recently picked up a lot of two 1638 schillings of the city of Riga under Swedish occupation.

On inspection, one of them is among the 4 listed varieties in Numista, but the other is unusual in that the 38 in the date are in a large font, and the word "SOLIDVS" seems to be spelled with what is a numeral 8 at the beginning (same as in the date). The only reference I have for this type is Numista, which does not mention this variety.

I am aware from posts of one of our other CCF members that minor coins from this part of the world are very rich in varieties in the 17th century, so I do not delude myself that it is especially valuable ... But always fun to stumble across such things (I will add it to Numista when I get a chance).

Another possibility I have considered is that this is a counterfeit, since the small minor coins of his region and era were widely counterfeited in Moldavia (the lot was from a large Polish auction house who I would have expected to catch a counterfeit, as they sell a lot of these).

Edit: Since posting I have found what appears to be another example of this variety of the 1638. So, I will chalk it up to Numista being a bit incomplete (it has now been submitted as a 5th variety for this date, and will be added to the catalog)

Normal legend and date reverse: SOLIDVS C RIGENSIS 38:
Riga-City-1638-Schilling---

Variety legend and date reverse 8OLIDVS CIVI RIGENSIS 3 8
Riga-City-1638-Schilling---

That is interesting, The second s is an 8 in numista's listing of the imitations.

Thank you for the link. I need to study it more (just saw it, and it's a bit late).

I do already have one Suceavian counterfeit in my collection, of a 1660s era Polish coin. This one migh tbe a bit early, and he "coppery" looking one is the normal variety

Looking closer at yours, both the s before and after the date look kinda 8'y but they do seem to have the remains of serifs unlike the 8 in the date which is perfectly round.

I agree.
I compared that first S in SOLIDVS to the second S in SOLIDVS and the first S in RIGENSIS (the second is less clear) and felt it resembled the 8 much more than these Ses. But you are right, looking more closely, there is a hint of serif especially at the top right of that first S in SOLIDVS.

Still, the larger numerals of the date, combined with CIVI RIGENSIS make it a variety not yet listed in Numista (and I think also make it less likely to be Suceavan, for which CIVI RIGENSIS is not listed).

Thanks for commenting!
