I have been told that a "black" 1982 penny is of no additional value yet, I have seen that some places value it to $100...

How would one be able to tell the true difference between a penny subjected to a sort of chemical reaction versus being a penny without "zinc" plating?

Please educate with a few better sources if ya don't mind....

I'd probably start by weighing it. Zinc will be around 2.5 grams. Copper around 3.1 grams.

to the CCF!

The missing copper coins should be silver in color, at least when they are struck. When the copper has been chemically removed it can discolor the zinc core turning it dark. Also it's better to research the coins that have sold to get a true value, not the asking price.

Please post photos of the coin. It's impossible to give opinions on a specific coin without them.

Here's the deal. With exposed zinc it doesn't matter if it was reverse electroplated, chemically stripped of copper, or left the mint like that once the surface is damaged.

For a true unplated zinc cent to have value it would need to be in pristine mint state condition. Once the zinc starts corroding nobody will care how the plating came off.

If in mint state condition the zinc is still silver, looks like a cent in every detail, and be relatively smooth and uncorroded. And have luster.

It would be so easy to create a "black" cent by striping the copper and rubbing it in gun oil. I cannot see anyone paying for such a coin unless they didn't know any better, but of course ebay is full of such buyers.

Crazydave, to the CCF!
