The King of all Australian Florins

That is right the Melbourne 1934/35 Florin, the super grand daddy of all and look at it.

This is gEF with some scratches on fields and light wear. To me it looks practically UNC.

I bid on it 2 weeks ago and forgot about it, thinking I had not won it - well what a surprise. It only cost $370 all up.

Accumulated savings and credit card breathing space.

I make very little ($500 a week), but I own my house, have no addictions and can save $250 a week easy. I don't buy stuff like that all the time. Plus I sold $1200 worth of stuff 2 months ago.

I will have to cool it with the shopping for coins for a few weeks though - next goal is a 1932 Florin.

I don't want to be an alarmist but at first glance I'm a little concerned with its authenticity.

Maybe its just the lighting but I feel that when you get it in hand it might warrant further investigation.

Its a bad photo, it was sold by Mowbrays, I doubt its fake, the hand looks fine, also this coin is gEF not Uncirculated, so there is wear.

Robe definitely reaches end of coin, weight is 11.30 grams which is 0.01grams of ideal, well within tolerance.

If it was fake, I would be sending it back.

I also read this article and my coin had none of the signs except crown and I put that down to wear (Partially only)

Better quality image, to see if you still think its fake, because I have a 14 day right of return

You can see robe touches rim of coin and the dot above the letters is ovoid and not spherical. Metal is silver and weight 11.30grams, which is what is expected for a coin in EF/AU grade (Fake weighs 11.1 grams, VF 11.27g and UNC is 11.31g)

Nose shows right detail and streams around man's face appear to be right.

Coin shows overall light wear and none of the grey green colour and flat detail of the fakes.

The lettering is tapered and ligatured at the bottom.

The robe looked incomplete on photo as close up on my phone means having to hold the phone steady for 5 seconds and it always shakes a bit causing a double exposure thing.

Any doubts were cast by 3 things

1. A bad over exposed cellphone photo.
2. The double imaging of the phone and lack of detail, plus the photo filter that automatically gives high grade coins a pale and washed out appearance.
3. The coin is gEF not UNC, yet appears UNC because of the lustre usually found on EF and AU pieces.

Praise the lord, because I would hate to think I laid down nearly 4 big ones for a fake coin!

Yes Steve I am addicted to silvery round things! So are you!

And anyone else who stops by here, no one decides to look at a thread about a collection of Florins unless they expect to see some eye candy.

Not a Florin, but another great coin for you and me to add to the collection. This is AU to borderline UNC.

It's a beauty and I know this is real! If anything I probably need to upgrade my 1937!

PrinceTane, that is a great looking 38. I still only have 50% of the Aussie crown. I'll get a 38 one day. Come to think of it I use to own a 38, a Smith & Wesson .38. :)

Don't most members of this forum (myself included) share a common addiction? Coins are worse than pokie bling!

Nice florins BTW PT.
