I picked this up on ebay, described as "broadstruck, off center." I can't quite wrap my head around a processionals that would result in this sort of "reeded edge enclosing reeded edge" without distorting the reciprocal edge. Very interested in the wisdom of your experience.

Not a broadstruck, it's a collar clash. Not a very rare error, but a cool one nonetheless. Someone else should be able to explain exactly how this happens, but I am not that person. Good luck!

Many thanks. That's how it was listed, but I couldn't see a broadstruck aspect to it. That makes more sense, to the process for creating this baffles me.

to the CCF!

if it were broadstruck the coin would have a smooth edge and be larger in diameter than a normal dime.

Collar Clash is caused by damage to the rim gutter of the die from contact with the collar's reeded design. The obverse die struck the collar's reeding and transferred some of that pattern to the rim gutter area. This could have happened long before your coin was struck.

Your coin looks like it's slightly misaligned and this allowed the damaged rim with the "extra" design picked up in the clash to transfer that same pattern to your coin. This can be found on lots of coins, but most aren't as pronounced as the clash seen above.

Thanks - that really helps. Though I have been a collector for decades, it's only recently that I became interested in error coins. This forum has been an amazingly helpful resource.
