A couple types will probably be upgraded in the future, but at least I can say I have them. Pic quality is a mixed bag on this one as I kept having to fight with the autofocus. Thanks for looking! pginrh Valued Member Canada 456 Posts	Posted 10/25/2020 08:01 am In the early 1940s the Mint started to chrome plate the dies to extend die life. The adherence of the chrome in the early days (around 1943 and 1944) was not great and it started to flake off around thhe edges of sharp transitions on the die after the die was used for a number of strikes. The die where the chrome playing had flaked off created small raised portions on the coin around the sharp transitions (mainly seen around the denticles( hence the term mortar Set as the appearance of the raised portion looked like masonry plaster).. It can be seen on all denominations for this time period and I have seen it until the 1950s on some 50c coins. Edited by pginrh 10/25/2020 11:48 am Report this Post to the Staff
