Can someone tell me what is going on with the top part of this coin? It looks like there's a half circle impression across the top half of it.

I also noticed all of these scratch's that go right up to the raised areas on the reverse. Is that from normal wear and tear or is that some other type of error? Plus, do you think there's any value for this since it's so beat up? I haven't been able to locate any other error coins for the Olympic Half Dollars when searching online.

Show pictures of the entire coin front and back.
It looks like it was scratched from cleaning or from circulation. Where did you get it? That coin was not issued for circulation. It was broken out of case, issued by the mint.

Well the coin is a mess. That's a shame! He probably used it as a pocket piece. Money clip? You mean a money clip used to hold dollar bills?!
Just for the heck of it, put the coin in a small bowl of acetone. Submerge a Q-tip into the acetone and "gently" (not that it makes much difference now) wipe that area in question. See what happens.

Looks like a plastic film (tape or acetone resistant glue). I think I see it beginning to roll up in your after-the-acetone bath picture. Look at where it crosses the player's head. The line moved when comparing photos taken before and after your acetone bath.

I think Numiscrat is exactly right. Plus the line looks more pronounced. Tape? Glue? Epoxy? Is this line raised? Soak it over night in acetone.
