I was going through tonights rolls and I found this 1974 with strange markings on it. Kinda new to penny searching, is this a counter stamp? if it is does it make it more valuable, and why do people do it ?  |

Yes, it's a counterstamp... some people collect them, but usually they aren't worth much. Yours is picturing the outline of "that state up north" (of Ohio), that those of us here in the Buckeye State don't mention it's name  , especially this time of the year during college football season. I thought the counterstamp look like Michigan state; also, look at what seemed like a letter M in the middle.

thats cool, I've heard of counter stamps I just didnt think they were so common, so far I have gone through $60 in rolls and this is the first I found. in addition I have yet to find a WAM or a newer S ughh |

yuengling101, you most likely won't find "newer S" mint pennies in your rolls, as all S mint pennies since 1974 are only issued as proof coins. I won't say you'll never find one, but it won't be easy... someone would have to put it into circulation after removing it from a proof set. I guess it depends on your definition of "newer"... newer than '74 it will be a proof, '74 and older, you should be able to find S mint pennies just about anywhere in bank rolls, with a little patience at least. "Hole fillers" are coins some people consider to be in such poor condition a regular collector would only use it to fill a hole, a spot, in a coin album until a better condition one can be found. But, that's a subjective statement, as one person's junk coin is another's prized possession. I especially hate the term when ebay sellers use it in their auction titles... makes me want to pass right over their ads as they are saying the coin isn't really worth owning until you find a better one... so why should I pay for a coin that I am only going to replace later? |

ohhhh, ok I understand, these are collectors filling albums. I thought they were talking about coins that had a hole and it was filled.

i had one yesterday I though was a steel but it was a coated 53  |

rrc, go ahead and throw it into your pile to return to the bank... it's a penny that either has been striped of it's copper coating down to the zinc or it's been plated, either way it's only worth a penny and not worth keeping.
