I found a 79 with a filled D last night. From what I could find this is very common, but I was wondering: Is that an error or a variety? Thanks

To CCF joe2758! It would be an error, but a very common one.

Do u guys have tips for a newbie in telling cleaned from original luster? I found a 60s cent with a shine. but it looked to worn otherwise it must have been cleaned. I think I once heard something about a wheel of light reflection but I don't understand it

Joe2758, a cleaned coin would be dull, lack mint luster, and might have hairline scratches from abrasion marks. The color will also be off as well.

that's cool of you, gaman. I purchased an automatic copper cent sorter, so I've been going through coppers. Found some AU 60s 70s 80s...That filled D I mentioned earlier and an of center. I hope I can find some doubling, even if it's just Machine Doubling

So I am wanting to start looking for errors and varieties on Lincoln Cents. I was looking at the Whitman Lincoln Cents Red Book or the Cherry Pickers Guide There is also a "Looking Through Lincoln Cents: A Chronology of a Series". Which of the two is the best to help with my new endeavor? Thank you

Carloscoria, you have definitely made the right choice! I'm glad! I would try the most recent Cherry Pickers Guide book. Also, by the way, I am a huge errors and varieties geek, on the Lincoln Cent series, so you're in very good hands! I would also look and research all of these websites. For Doubled Dies: www.doubleddie.com www.varietyvista.com www.coppercoins.com www.crdievarieties.com For Errors on coins: www.error-ref.com www.cuds-on-coins.com Anyways, I hope this helps.
