Hi,
I've got a couple of these dated 1951 that are aluminum (silver), this one is gold colored. Are these commonly found both silver and gold?

Thanks,

Hi,
5 Lire 1951 PIVS A. XIII metal is Italma, that is a merge of aluminium and Magnesium used from Italy mint for some coins starting in 1946.
About your picture it should be 1952, since in the Obverse side you are showing there is A. XIV and this is for 1952.
Anyway both 1951 and 1952 are known only in Italma metal and minted in 1.500.000 pieces each value, they are Common and evaluated around 5 euro in UNC.
The only exception is for pattern, that has been mint in Silver and there are only 20 pieces for each value, they are evaluated around 1.000 euro.
To understand if you have a pattern (I don't think you have), of course it is a silver coin and there is the word "PROVA" somewhere on the coin.

Sorry.....I should have included pictures of both sides. Yes, this coin is from 1952 and no, the 1951's are not silver, the metal is too light and just does not have the right feel.
But, both 1951's look to be aluminum, and silver in color. This one is gold and that is why I bring up the question. Maybe the '51 has just worn down to the silver color?

another way to understand if it is aluminium or not is the weight, the Italma/aluminium coin is 1 gram,
and you should be able to understand manually if the weight is for a silver coin or an aluminium one.
