I was talking to a dealer and he said that if you want to send in a first release to get graded (specifically talking about NGC), you have no chance at getting a 70 unless you send in your unopened package from the mint. Yesterday I received my RP pilgrim gold and am considering sending it in.

What do you think? Is this true?

Is it better to directly submit or should I go through an authorized dealer?

It's not like it's impossible, but less probable maybe. NGC/PCGS are very good at carefully removing coins from OGP, and not to sound rude, but I promise they're probably better at it than you, me and probably most people on here.

I know you need to send the unopened package as shipped from the mint to qualify for FDOI, early release, etc. I've never read/heard anything related to grades if the coin is outside the shipping box when shipped to the TPG.

Nope. By the time it gets to the grader it is in a 2 1/2 X 2 1/2 flip and he has no idea if it came in in the sealed original box, in a capsule, or loose in a flip. He grades it based on what he sees in front of him and the coin speaks for itself.
