The missing leg of the R stems back to a hub that had become damaged in that way. Subsequently, the dies it produced struck coins that were missing that leg of the R.
A cool educational find but not a particularly rare thing.

I was unaware of that. Would have guessed circulation damage.

The big three doubled dies for 1936 , fs-,01/02/03 , were all first hubbed with the broken R hub then finished with an undamaged hub.
