Good group there Steve, some of those coins look familiar

My Kiwi stuff for 56 includes the Strapless 3d, but not the penny which is more scarce. There are around 300k strapless Threepence, 200k Sixpences dated 1957 and only 50k of the pennies, hence their scarcity and cost ($100 for an average one - the other 2 coins are in the $10 - $20 level).

The strapless 3d is the coin on the left. You will notice all the others have a line across the neck for her dress and the notch on her shoulder that is the "strapped" version. The strapless coin does not have this notch and the line is indistinct after halfway across. Bear this in mind as tomorrow when we get to 1955, all the coins will be "Strapless".

Again VF grade coins proliferate, but the shilling is almost EF, the Halfpenny is AU and the "strapped" 3d is EF.

1955 will be the first year I show with several "scarce coins".

1956 in Australia was the big year as it was the Olympic Games in Melbourne which bought a lot ofpositive publicity and global attention to the land down under.

A worn shilling which has some bizarre pink/red paint, a decent 3d and not a bad penny.

However we have another nice Florin

This one is gEF (A bit of wear) yet still has a nice lustre (Old photo). It is also a date where high grade examples are harder to find that most QE2 years, so this coin is one of my Aussie highlights (I think I paid about $40 for it - much more than my other "Lizzies").

Interesting, I ran out of daylight as I a lot else on today, my photos are not good.

Heres a complete NZ set

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

I took this at 8.34pm on a day where sunset is at 8.29pm!
The coins are quite worn, only the 6d is nice (EF). The ½d and 1/- are scarce for 1955 with just 240k and 200k minted. There is a variety of 6d with the strapped obverse and it is mega rare (5 known out of 2 million coins). I don't have it obviously.

1954 will see better photos.

Steve, your 55 shilling is very nice, a great example for a scarce year!

My Australia is just 3 coins. No Florins were issued in 1955, so the Florin show will resume tomorrow and there are more to come.

A woefully bad (Barely fine) shilling and a EF but warped Threepence.

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition
This blurry photo shows a late addition 6d coin. Despite the blurs its in high VF condition. I have none of the bronze.

The quality and number of coins for both countries will shoot up dramatically tomorrow.

Nice Florins there, I don't have a Royal Visit one now as I want a perfect example again. I used to have a very worn example and though the design was strange, the wear made the lion and kangaroo blend into one, making it look like a centaur!

NZ in 1954 was the most limited year in a while. The first of 7 years in a row with no Florins or Halfcrowns and also this year there was not even a shilling!

Like 1955, the 1954 Halfpenny is considered scarce and I am lucky to have an EF/AU example with some lustre left. Although not rare, the mintages of the 1d and 6d were below usual levels and only the 3d had a normal number issued.

You will notice the strapless portrait with little detail and often poorly struck, making the difference between a EF and UNC coin hard to distinguish, fortunately my other 3 here are all in that VF category

My mother (God rest her soul) was born in 1954 and it was a year when two silly schoolgirls murdered one of their mothers and lesbianism and a fantasy world was part of the reason.

NZ was a different place back then, a moral panic over badly behaved teenagers led to a ridiculous enquiry called the Mazengarb (A Cornishman born around 1880) enquiry and 24k of a booklet about raising your kids was sent to everyone on the DPB. The whole thing can be found on the internet and is just bizarre.

Australia in 1954 was a bit more exciting, the Queen and Prince Philip were there from February and into March (After being in NZ) and a Royal Visit florin was issued. I don't have one but Steve showed one. It was the last commemorative Florin issued and las

Here is what I do have!

Australian-And-New-Zealand-Coins,-How-Far-Back-Can-We-Go---First-Edition

Here is a Florin (Standard issue - gVF), Shilling and a very nice 6d if stained. No Penny was issued in 1954 and I don't have the Halfpenny and the 3d is quite scarce by Lizzie standards.

Just one more year of Lizzie and then finally a different ruler!

From 1953 backwards, my coins particularly NZ get much better as we enter the exciting era and not far off the silver era.

PS Funny how verdigris shows up on coins in photos, but its not visible to the naked eye.
