People may not have known in 1944, or even today, that oil from your hands can cause permanent damage to your coins. I would surmise that someone tried to clean the oil off, leaving the damage that is there. Just a guess, but it seems to support the evidence seen on the coin. Report this Post to the Staff

I got fooled myself (happens often) The type of lights I used (LED white) created some kind of a reflection where, my guess, some more stress was applied when the coin was struck causing the silver to reflect differently. I re-did the images with another light source and another lens. voila, no issue. It proves that much can be done with lights and lenses to make a coin look good. It is amazing how different these two images are and the different details each "brings to light". This is the SAME coin!! Edited by 47P7 12/13/2020 2:41 pm Report this Post to the Staff
