This is a cool coin if its 5FS and DDR, please take a look and share your feedback on those conclusions. If this is not a 5FS, help others learn and share the rationale please, same with the DDR photos.

I do believe it is an FS JN, I don't see any doubling though.

Thanks, I am attaching two photos marked up to show what I am see for DDR. Few weeks back @coop provided a poster that showed extra thickness of devices and some had a bar going through the font, signs of DD.

Not seeing any doubling either. Neither am I seeing notching or extra thickness where your arrows and circles are pointing towards. I think the lighting and glare is confusing you.

Also there are no DDRs known on the 1987-P nickels.

Thanks for looking @Tanman2001. The areas I circled with lines through the devices on the top of the E, how does that happen? I'm also of the opinion DDR was a stretch but sharing pics to learn is important too! Thanks

I outlined the letter so you can see its shape without getting distracted by lighting.

You can see that the thickness of the letter has not increased and that the notching and separation lines you are seeing are actually just an illusion caused by shadows between the glare of the two light sources used in the photo.

Glare can make it difficult to tell if there is truly doubling on a coin or not. You either have to learn to differentiate lighting effects from actual features on the coin or change your lighting/photography setting to reduce glare (I'd recommend using only one light source or, if you have to have two, having the lights face more perpendicular to the coin's face rather than parallel). Both are equally as challenging!

Not seeing a DDR. FS on newer nickels is no big deal. You may want to put a filter on your light source.

@Tanman2001, thank you; for the marked up photo, your labels have been instructive. I still have issues with lighting, which I need to figure out with some deliberate effort. I have tried a ring lamp, and a clamp with a bulb fixture at the end, and have used white diffuser fabric. I'll keep on learning! Do you know of a free or low price version of Goddman's Book Numismatic Photography. I can't find for less than 99 bucks.

@John1, thanks again for your input, yes, without the DDR the FS designation here is not a premium value add.

Through research I located Goodman's website and here is a relevant article on the fundamentals of coin photography from his POV.
