For the last three years I have enjoyed looking for Lincoln Cent varieties. Whether searching through a brick from a bank or cherry picking online, it has been enjoyable but, I have now come to the realization that the niche that I enjoy is quite precarious. Without three sites: VarietyVista.com, Coppercoins.com and Doubledie.com I/we are, mostly, 'dead in the water'. From what I see, CONECA has supported VarietyVista [since I started] and the other two are private individuals [Chuck Daughtrey and John Wexler] who simply have a passion/vision for this hobby. CONECA has now shifted gears into a new direction and, hopefully, will continue to support this field. The two private supporters, hopefully, will continue too. Sure, people can write books about varieties but, the impact is not as great. Not sure where this rambling is going but, hopefully others have some thoughts and ideas to keep this hobby thriving. The funny thing is , when I started in this hobby , all there was to go by was books. The collecting of varieties and errors budded and bloomed before there was a web to put a site on. I'm sure the hobby will stumble on .

Thanks John, that is good to hear.
Not having much of a history, I don't have a sense of how things have been in the past [pre-internet].

Actually, the president of CONECA wrote a long comment on another forum. Yes CONECA and Variety Vista parted ways. The number on Variety Vista will not change and CONECA number will stay the same. The only thing thats different is who is attributing the coin. Numbering system staying the same. VV and CONECA are now separate. Thats really it. Heres most of it: Quote:10 years ago CONECA entered into an agreement with Dr. James Wiles to continue working on the CONECA Master Listings for a period of 10 years. Last year as required by the contract I notified Dr. Wiles that the contract was set to expire and we should talk about the future, negotiations began soon afterwards. I along with other CONECA board members thought that this could go in a different direction than it has. In the end, we had a vote of the board and it was determined that CONECA should go in another direction and that's where we're at. We have setup a spot in the CONECA forum for folks to upload photos so that we can look at them and in MOST cases save the person from paying a fee for what are PMD coins that get body bagged and sent back. A win for the person with the coin? We are currently working on a rather large database of coins that we will be posting on the CONECA website as the CONECA Master list which CONECA does own. We will continue with the same numbering system that we turned over to Dr. Wiles 10 years ago and that he has continued using. Not a lot of changes to location, fees, turn around time and people involved. It is STILL CONECA. I just presented a recommendation to the board to appoint Jason Cuvelier as the new attribution person and he will be the person helping us develop the new system/processes. Once we get that ironed out we will be adding to our forward progress. You can speculate and gossip all you want but nothing is in cement and nothing more is known at this time. (At least by me and the board) Its a work in progress and we are excited about the possibilities moving forward. AGAIN CONECA (The non profit entity) owns the CML. Its not going anywhere and will be getting added to soon with new finds and attributions. As for Dr Wiles, I wish him nothing but the best going forward in whatever he decides to do in the E/V world. Now can we keep the speculation and gossip to a minimum as things progress you can read about it in either the Errorscope, the front page of the CONECA website or from Press Releases by me. Funny thing about your comment John is, even with internet and sites to go to, I still use the books too..lol

I do worry about certain things being lost if something should happen to one of the important variety experts who runs one of these sites, but I think the over-all state of the hobby is very secure regardless. I think something like this happened with the Crawford listings, but that was before I got into the hobby.

The coin hobby started back when? I think it will be around for awhile longer. John1 From Wiki: Contemporary coin collecting and appreciation began around the fourteenth century

I don't believe it's on thin ice. The internet isn't the foundation of the hobby, it has just helped the hobby to thrive and expand. Make things more efficient and widespread.
The sites have allowed us to more easily identify certain varieties. However, if all sites were to go down, the hobby would still be going strong. Maybe at a slower pace, but it certainly wouldn't cripple over and die.
The coin collecting hobby will remain defiant long after we're all gone.
