Hello, this is my first post and I'm new to collecting. I just bought two 1973-S Eisenhower dollar coins, which are 40% silver and in the original blue packs. As such, they are uncirculated, sold as BU, and implied GEM quality. When received, I guess I was surprised there was no luster, that triangle of light that circles the coin like a record player. When in the light, the whole coin lights up for the most part. As expected, the blue envelope and chip inside seem original (ie, 47 years old), but the plastic cello holding the coin and blue chip seems new (update: on closer look, the cello may not be new and I can see it's stamped with 'packaged by United States Mint). I only spent $15 for each one; hard to imagine it's worth faking these. But I am a big fan of Ike, really love the coin, and thought I'd check before collecting more. Having trouble posting pic. Thank you for your thoughts and expertise! Edited by 1973Ike 12/27/2020 08:50 am

To CCF , While I'm not an expert on Eisenhower dollars I never cared for the quality of Blue Ike's . Yes they are uncirculated but don't expect anything better than what you would pull out of a mint sewn bag , a few bag marks and not much luster . If you really like Ike's I would just go with Red proofs and the more cameo the better .

All of my blue Ike's don't have much luster. It seems they have more of a satin finish to them. I don't think any thing is wrong with your coins.

All of the 40 per cent Blue Pak Unc coins have a Satin Finish . Thus the dull appearance . This also goes for the 1976 Three Coin Uncirculated sets .

I've noticed alot of the blue pack Ikes get a haze on them from the original packaging. If you are going to remove them for an album then a quick soak in acetone gets rid of the haze and brightens them up. I did that to all of mine in the Ike Dansco and they look fine.

Here's a pic of 74-S. Not a 73 like yours but typical of a Blue Envelope Ike. Yes they have a satin type finish but they do brighten up some from the OGP after acetone......... Hope this helps.

Hello All - I just wanted to say thank you for your replies and insights, very helpful! I figured out how to post picture, please see below and let me know if anything jumps out. To my eye, it's in great shape, with very few nicks.....I wasn't looking for anything out of this world, just happy with a nice, uncirculated Eisenhower and I like the blue envelop that comes with. I was just surprised there wasn't any luster. I wasn't planning on grading this or popping it out for album, was going to enjoy as is. It's not expensive, but a little bit of history and I think the coin has a neat story behind it.....I'm currently reading Eisenhower In War & Peace. I basically just got looking at the coin after studying Peace and Morgan dollars, and got curious, started reading. I get why it's not rare (expensive), but I think this is a great coin to collect.

to the Community! It has pretty much been covered here. The uncirculated 40% silver Ikes were minted with a satin finish. Many of them developed a milky haze (which is even more noticeable on the proof versions with their mirror finish), but from the image above yours looks to be in decent shape.
