My grandfather immigrated to the U.S. from Germany in the 1920s leaving the rest of his family behind. His mother gave him this coin when he left...he never spent it. What do you think the grade is? I tried my best with the photos...

Slight wear on the high points of the beard (obv) Keep this coin at gEF =
AU-55

Most of the wear most probably occurred in the 1888 -1920 period.

Beautiful coin. AU grade would be easily obtained on this example.

Thanks all. Let me ask a follow on question: what is the most convenient way to have the coin officially graded? Sorry for the dumb question, I've never thought about having a coin graded but this is one I never intend on selling and I'd like to have it in something better than the sad little container it is in.
