pighair47,

Now that's a unique "handle".

Your possibilities are about limitless. To achieve the most production for your effort, you should research first and obtain permission (if required) to search. Go online and try various google searches for your area. Also check out the online MD forums for additional info and tips.

Every town has a history. Look for places, venues, events where people gathered and had the opportunity to lose coins/jewelry. This list includes parks, schools, churches, swimming holes, fair grounds, etc. If you have friends in town who own/occupy older houses, touch base with them. Good luck.

Try City Hall where they might have old property maps from way back when. You never know what used to be in the area where they are about to build that new wall mat!!

The easiest answer is ... just ask. But to protect yourself and your finds, I would draw up a written agreement and have it handy in the event you receive verbal permission from someone you do not have a close, personal relationship with. The agreement should address disposition of any finds ... 50/50, 60/40, or I keep everything. The agreement should also hold the property owner "not liable" in case you do something stupid and hurt yourself on their property. Some would argue that these don't hold up in a court of law in cases of gross negligence, but we'll discuss that in other threads.

When asking be very courteous and respectful. I've been turned down in the past and thanked them for considering my offer. I was called back as I was walking away. Put yourself in their position ... some stanger wants to walk around my yard and dig holes. How would you feel in their shoes. Have an answer to all the these concerns before knocking on the door. Describe your digging method ... personally I take along a frisbee, place the plug in the frisbee and any other diggings until I'm done digging. Then I pour the loose dirt back into the hole and replace the plug. Can't even tell it has been dug. Offer to demonstrate for them.

My shiny new Whites Prizm IV detector arrived on Friday so I have been digging holes in our garden all weekend. I have found several cans, a ring pull, bits of copper pipe, wire and a right angled bracket. Not too surprising given our house was only built a couple of years ago. Still it's all good practise!

I have secured permission to detect on our subdivision's park so maybe something better might turn up there.

And then, I need to figure out who to ask in town to detect the parks there.

Depends on where you live but for the most part City Parks and Schools are generally OK. County parks are a different matter.
Call the Mayors office and ask them. I also ask if I can pick up a letter saying its ok. Sometimes Constables are not conversant with the rules and might hassle you this has only happen a couple of times. Producing the letter usually saves a lot of hassle. Go to your local police station and ask them if its ok to detect in the parks. This will also help if some one disputes your claim. Be Nice and be polite. My wife has a hard time with this she has been know to re-bury trash if some one gets snotty with her. Not good for the hobby but the look on peoples faces is priceless.
