Hello fellow collectors,

I've attached photos of a nickel I found as I plowed through a few coin rolls this week. I'm new to the hobby and would appreciate opinions and comments.

thanks

Agree, looks like a grease strike-through. Nice example.

At first glance it looks like a Greaser, and then when noticing those patterned, localized lines over the area raises a different question! Maybe PMD ?

Hey Chase007,

It does have scratches that are definitely PMD, but I think that would be expected for a coin circulating 27 years. The affected area is perfectly smooth with just the surface scratches you noted, so I ruled out wear or mechanical grinding, for why the detail reliefs are missing.

If the weight is normal, then I would say it's a nice Greaser.
