So here we are, 2020 officially behind us. While most of us hoped it would never end, when in reality it was the pandemic, as I reflected back there is one thing that stands out above COVID for me personally.

2020 saw a rise in "toned" coins, meaning specifically, the obvious and sometimes hideous rainbow colored Peace dollars, Walking Liberty and Franklin halves. On any given day, one can easily find these over multiple pages on ebay. Numbers which should be sounding alarm bells across the collecting community to extinguish the fire.

And that is why I took the time to post this plea. Please do not, for any reason buy these. If you are new to the hobby educate yourself on what a true naturally toned coin is and looks like. Spread the word to those who collect but may not do the forum, blog or podcast things.
These artificially manipulated pieces of round metal, which is what they are reduced to after the process, become typical bullion worth market price. Cutting off the sales of these is the only way to reduce them in coming years. This one in particular with a rise in new collectors brought on largely by the pandemic.

Lastly, while toned coins do exist, finding a true "rainbow" would be like finding a 1916d Liberty Dime in pocket change. These dipped coins treated like eggs at Easter are not.

Thanks for reading!

Excellent rant . First newbies have to deal with counterfeits and now it's artificially toned coins . The guys that produce this junk are a nuisance to the hobby , mainly the new beginners .
