Students learn history through old Roman coins
By CHUCK CLEMENT
Capital Journal Staff
Joey Tetzlaff, left, a Pierre sixth-grader, wields a mallet that will help him make his own coin out of a piece of lead. Dawson Lewis, holding the locking pliers, visited Mark Halling's social studies classes on Tuesday to talk about the origins of money in Western civilization. Lewis, a Pierre resident and collector of ancient coins, showed the students at Morse Middle School a number of coins from the Roman Empire and also demonstrated how ancient coins were manufactured. About 70 sixth-graders at Morse Middle School held part of ancient Rome during their social studies classes on Tuesday when a guest speaker brought to their classroom old coins struck during the reign of the caesars.
