Joey Tetzlaff, left, a Pierre sixth-grader, wields a mallet that will help him make his own coin out of a piece of lead. Dawson Lewis, holding the locking pliers, visited Mark Halling's social studies classes on Tuesday to talk about the origins of money in Western civilization. Lewis, a Pierre resident and collector of ancient coins, showed the students at Morse Middle School a number of coins from the Roman Empire and also demonstrated how ancient coins were manufactured.
