Is there any distinction between the "specimen" coins contained in the rare 1969 to 1976 "VIP Specimen" Sets and those contained in the more common " Prestige" sets, sold to the general public?

Also, any insights on the rarity of the VIP sets? The Haxby and Charlton catalogues seem to disagree on the 1970 VIP set as the former indicates 100 known vs 1000 indicated by the latter. Charlton does not appear to list the post 1970 VIP sets.

1969 - Very hard to find/scarce

1970 - 1000 is the estimated number I believe. Can be found, but looking at $500+ most of the time. $1 specimen coin was minted in higher numbers and easy to find in its own case.

1971+ - Common and easy to find, the case is the only scarce part that I am aware of. Coins cannot be distinguished from others.

Except for 1973. Most coins in the double dollar Prestige Sets fell victim to the "red fluff"... finding a bright red 1973 1-cent is not easy!

Yes,I would agree on the 73's as well. I have not done much hunting for the 73's but mine was definitely hit the red fluff. At a favorable angle and lighting it looks kind of neat with a purplish polkadot tone, but most of the time it is kind of ugly.

Thanks to all for the information thus far ! Are the early 1970s "VIP Specimen" cases identical for each of the years or is there an identifier or distinction for each year?
