Every once in a while, when I refresh or open a forum category, all the folder icons on the left become purple, like a new message is post.

Then after a while, it comes to normal.

Not a real problem, but wondered why it happens.

Never noticed it, never happened to me, here or at any other Snitz based forums. I also support Snitz users at the snitz forum home site and I don't think I saw such a complaint. Also if it happens only with you, must be something browser related.
Check whether you're logged in when that happens.

I use Firefox, and the purple-yellow-folder-thing thing never works properly for me - I just ignore it.

Snitz forums are used in many sites throughout the world and with many browsers. There is no known Firefox issue with Snitz... but maybe the folder stuff does not work as you'd expect...

Folders colors are determined by the user's last visit date, not by the fact that the user have read the topic or not.

I use IE 6 and sometimes after a post all folders go purple
I saw the last time that for some or other reason I was no longer logged in
So I think the forum software logs me out sometimes

Rui,

What RenaL says happens to me sometimes too. It's not very often but it does happen. I've had it happen here, on Snitz, and on SpareDollar.

Can it be a problem with the cookie? Maybe occassionally it doesn't get written properly? If I log out and back in in goes away instantly.

The forum cookie is 30 days. The cookie is what keeps you logged in. However, if you have a program that automatically clears your cookies, you will get logged out by it.

Most of these programs have an option to mark "cookies to keep". I use HistoryKill 2003. Every time I close my last browser window, it wipes all my browser cache and cookies, except those I mark to keep. This forum's cookie is included in those.

I use Norton system Doctor ( and firewall and antivirus)
Adaware 6
Spybot Search and Destroy
I have no automatic cookie wiper
If I have problems it is the NO flash and anti pop up that causes them
Allthough ad-aware 6 will allways report this forum's cookie as a tracker I tell it to leave the cookie alone

Yeah it's funny, programs like adaware and S&D want you to think that cookies will burn your house down and pillage your village. When in reality most cookies are totally harmless and actually improve your surfing.

If the forum didn't have a cookie, you'd have to log-in on every page.

What I'd think is that you'd be logged out when that happens. I never experienced such a situation and I'm a very active visitor of several Snitz forums.
