Would it be correct to assume that there were no silver dollars made in 1970? I thought I read somewhere that only nickel dollars were made that year.

Yes, 1971.

Actually there are both , silver Fifty cents and Dollars that were struck in 1970 .
They are of questionable legality and ICCS will NOT accept them for certification .
I appraised a prominent Canadian collection on Vancouver Island in 2006
both were present in the collection. The source was a very prestigious Coin
Dealer in Vancouver BC in 1971 . They are the same diameter as the nickel
Issues that started in 1968 . Appearance is that of the Specimen Coinage
of 1967 .
Heritage sold a silver 50 cents in 2019 in an NGC 64 holder for $1440 in 2019 . There is currently a PCGS graded example for sale on ebay graded MS63 .
