To my uneducated eye I see what appear to be doubling in "liberty", and the date. Additionally, some characters in " in God we trust" seem weird.

Afraid I'm not seeing it. Looks like possible circulation flattening on the date.

I don't think what I see is circulation flattening, but rather, in the date and mintmark early stage split plating (where zinc hasn't been exposed yet). I could be wrong, but I think this is the issue.
