i have many pennies in question but I have 1 from 1965 that has a maroon color no mint mark and no fg initials on reverse.also in this picture if you look close at the dates a penny on left side down says 196s

Be nice to have a picture of the reverse to see if it has the same coloring. That way would be easier to come up with a more defined reason. And yes, the cent in the picture does look as 196S but obviously did not come that way from the mint.

To make it short and sweet , Copper cents tone down to may different shades of brown according to it's storage and environment .

Yes: Red is the new Brown. Just plain old Red Brown "Patina"
