Quote: Carefully read the introduction to the book. Your answer may come out of that. I did that... I may be stupid, but I'm not dumb...

I only have a very old copy of the Red Book, but I thought the a reading of the introduction or other preliminary pages may be the best place to find an explanation of the parenthesis.

That's the first thing I did... I actually thought it was rather silly they do NOT put the explanation in the beginning. They explain condition a LOT, but not the actual info shown and how to decipher it. The Scott stamp catalogs are AMAZINGLY detailed, and those are what I am used to. Perhaps the larger versions of the Red Book, etc give more info in their introductions.

Next thing to do is email the publisher, and ask for an explanation.

My 2008 RedBook explains that proof coin mintages are in parentheses, on page 21, under the "Welcome to Numismatics" section. Steve :)

@Nells250: Which edition of the Red Book do you have? The ones I checked do have an explanation of the parentheses used in the charts/tables in the front section of the book.

Quote: THERE IT IS! Great! I'm glad you found it! Now, maybe a quick acknowledgement by you that sel_69l's suggestion was a good one vs. one that merited ridicule?

I typed up two different responses... decided to delete both. I'm not looking for trouble and I can see sel_69l isn't either.
