Here's the answer from my Mint Rep:

Quote:
Good morning Don,

It has to do with total weight of the coin.

By increasing the weight of the coin with other elements, this changes the overall purity of the item.

The coin is fine silver and the added weight of other elements (metal or embellishments) brings the overall purity of the coin under the required 99.9% to not charge taxes.

Maybe now we can get back to 'Just Coins' and not all these things that look like a table at the craft fair.

The answer by the rep does not explain why the emerald on the gold coin makes it GST/HST exempt.

Better explanation from my rep that clears it up, at least for 2021 MC coin.

"The Silver coin itself uses 999.9% Silver in its composition (26.687g), the added gold plating (0.12544g) is enough to change the entirety of the coin to below an overall 99.99% purity level"

By this explanation, the coin with the gold plating is 99.51%.

I think the novel finish on the "W" Mint Mark Maple Leaf coins is interesting and potentially attractive. I'd like to see one in hand, but won't purchase one just for the opportunity. Maybe someday at a coin show...

Other than that, I didn't have much interest in this month's release. How about you?

I like the History on the move series... The usage of fonts to reinforce the era is a nice touch and showing some consistency in artistic style. That said at $600 for 5oz of Silver, it is too rich for my blood. I will wait to see if they show up in the secondary market in a few years at a more reasonable price.
