I wanted to know is it exceptable to take your own price list to coin shop or to coin show with you. I know I have seen other at coin shows with there own price list. But do you take oyur own price list to the coin shop with you or if not a book at least a list of prices. I am not sure what a dealer thinks when someone brings in a price book. How many of you take a price book or list to shops or shows.

And for the few dealer what is your opion on when someone comes to your shop with there own list.

I really trust the owner of the store I go to most of the time but not sure yet on the others in the area

I would have thought it OK, so long as you weren't arrogant about it. Don't shove the list in the dealer's face and say something like "My list says that coin's only worth $5 - why are you charging $10 for it?". Dealers really, REALLY hate that sort of thing. Or so I'm told.

There was a thread over on the CU forum where a guy asked if it were OK to bring along a whole set of Krause catalogues to the coin show with him (must be some sort of fitness freak - I can only lift two at a time! ). The consensus was, sure, so long as you don't take up too much space at the dealer's booth.

I've found that, if you're anything like a regular customer and they're not too busy, they're quite happy for you to look the coins up in their own reference catalogues. Sure beats lugging the things around town yourself.

When I go to a brick and Mortar dealer, or a coins show for that matter,, I select the coins I want to purchase before hand,, If need be I make a small cheat sheet that will fit in my shirt pocket this list is in stone for which coin, grade and my price,, I will not switch gears on any of it . This is just my way.

If you want to take a price guide with you do it ,, If it bothers the dealer it might be time to find a new dealer !!!

I agree with both Rick and Sap.

I personally write a list with prices for the coins I am after. If I missed anything I ask the dealer for their book, depending how busy they are.

Almost always, my little hand written notebook and every once in a while a coin prices magazine. My main Brick and Mortar dealer has price guides and greyheets laying all over his store. Mike P.S. I would not argue with anyone that could carry a "set" of Krauses around a show! Yikes!!! Maybe he has a push cart!!

I don't think there should be a problem with it, but I can also see dealers feeling defensive as soon as they see that you have one. My suggestion would be to make a list of the coins you are looking for with the value from your price guide and what you are willing to pay for it. A small handwritten shopping list won't be seen as a threat and you would still have all of the information you need at your fingertips.

I used to just walk around all the tables and when I saw something I liked I walk away and made a note in a little pocket notebook. After that I went outside and checked everything. When dealers see you walking around with grey sheets and blue sheets your giving them information that they will use to make assumptions about you. Some don't care, some get annoyed about it--"Another low-baller", some of them rub the hands together--"oh boy another rube from wallstreet."

The best policy, IMO, is to not let anyone at a coin show make assumptions about you. When you find something you like at a fair price, just pay it. If your disposed to chit-chatting, that's fine too, after you done buying.
