I took the survey but wish the questions had allowed for explanations or even a "sometimes" option. As a rule, I don't clean my coins, however there have been circumstances that have caused me to clean a coin.

For a decent survey, they would need to define 'cleaning' first. Without that definition, any yes or no answer is fairly meaningless.

The survey was way to simplistic. As Stujoe said "define cleaning"! Mike

The Pony Express hasn't gotten here yet, but will take a look when it arrives. That should be tomorrow after the P.O's open up again.

I have now seen the survey and it does lack some depth in its search. It however is for a worthy cause and taking the survey would help out someone who is interested in this part of coin collecting. So I'm going to complete the survey as ask. For those of you who don't take Coin World or have access to this survey, here is the web site that it may be found and completed by internet. http://www.coinworld.com/maltbysurv...kieSupport=1

I'm glad they don't give any tidy definition of what a cleaned coin is. IMO, we are the market, so cleaning should only be defined by each of us. That's exactly what they ask in question #1--"What does cleaning mean to you?" I always rinse coins in denatured alcohol and then hit them with compressed air-- I don't consider that cleaning but others might so I wrote in the space "Other (please specify)" that I always rinse tokens and coins. If someone wants to call that cleaning, knock yourself out. If someone wants to believe that washing a coin with detergent isn't cleaning, that doesn't obligate me to believe it.

I assume all of you who are frustrated with the survey answered no to all of the questions. If you answer yes to any question then a new tree of the survey opens up where it allows you to define cleaning and give examples of when you might clean a coin or even retone a coin. If the correct answer for any question is "sometimes" for you then answer yes to that question so that you can elaborate on when you would need to clean a coin.

Cave Troll, I wish I had realized that. As a rule, I don't clean my coins, but have on very few occasions. As a result, I answered No to the first question so didn't get to give any additional info. The way the question was worded, I took it to mean "Do you clean your coins regularly or as a general practice?" which I don't.

The questions are the same ones they asked 1992 when there wasn't an Internet for us. So people were reading the questions in CoinWorld and could see the other parts of the question. People can read this survey too in CoinWorld--2/27/ pg 26 but I suspect anyone on the Internet will use the on-line survey. They may not see the need to read it first in CoinWorld when they know they are going to be reading it on-line. Hopefully it will work out somehow. Am I having another "Mircosoft experience" or has my avatar disappeared?
