Taiwan, 5... somethings. Taiwanese dollars, probably.

I'm not confident of the date. I think I'm reading 106 or 108, but that would be 2018/2020 respectively, and your story seems to imply that it has to be older than that.

EDIT: I was correct in the reading 106, but it actually corresponds to 2017. Numista entry.

Well I didnt get it on my deployment and I know my father has never been to Taiwan. Maybe that's why I had no clue. So it's made in Taiwan... nothing really significant about this coin I guess? At least I can google info about it now.

Your coin is a 2017 Taiwan 5 Yuan. Reference is Y# 552.

The first 4 symbols on the head side of the coin read from left to right is the year.

The site below is excellent if you need to find the year of foreign coins.

@Minnimarine You're welcome. I use this constantly for coins from Asia and the Middle East. Handy when noodling through bulk world coin mixes. There is also an amazing (free) phone app called CoinScope that is invaluable for identifying foreign coins if you have no idea what country it belongs to.
