I've often wondered why 1827 has so many die-marriages. Perhaps, associated with/when the new steam presses were phased into operation for the Half Dollars at the mint, or quality checking the work of a new contractor who manufactured the dies...

Take Care

Wow. If my "in my head" math is correct, that's 449 varieties plus however many were "mated" in 1815. Assembling a complete variety set of those would be one heck of an accomplishment, wouldn't it?

The steam press wasn't used at the mint until 1836.

Very close there are 450 varieties plus three crushed edge proof varieties that were made at a later date. Only one person has ever managed to put together a set of all 450 varieties.
