Hi,

Would really appreciate some advice. I have bought a coin in a plastic casing. Is there away of opening the casing without braking the plastic? Or is meant not to be open?

Thanks

Well first off, it isn't a coin. Looks like a silver bullion bar.

Second, it's in a typical "grading" holder, except by the looks of it it's just using it to hold the bar, rather than display an actual grade.

Personally I'd leave it in, it's meant to preserve the bar. If you want to remove it, I'm sure others will chime in on how to do so.

It might just pry open with a screwdriver.

Sorry. Just to clarify. I am still relatively new to coin collecting and naively assumed that the casing was a standard design that everyone used. So people could tell me straight away you can't take it off without braking it or there is a specific technique to open or close it.

Looks like there are 2 tabs on the side. Did you try lifting those?

My favorite tool is a pocket knife. It always helps with hard to open capsules and the like. I'm assuming those tabs are to hold the bar in place, right?

@Silvercents: it is a coin, a 10 euro from France. It's just not a round coin.

The casing is presumably how it was issued from the French mint. Unlike TPG slabs, mint packaging is usually designed to be opened. As it isn;t round, there won;t be any screw-lock mechanism. You should be able to prise open the seam with a knife, screwdriver, or even your fingernails.

The case appears to have been damaged, at the bottom. Don't try opening it there, unless you've already tried elsewhere, as the plastic is more likely to break there.

Huh interesting, thanks for informing me Sap, didn't realize such things existed. I haven't gone very deep into the world of different forms of coins.

I'd go along with leaving it alone. If you damage that case, then what?
