Came across this coin in my change recently. The toonie is not in the best shape, but I did notice that the brass colour is over the edge of the interior rim on the obverse side.... Is this a common error?

Not common but not uncommon. Yours is just slightly off. If it is off enough that you can see space between the core and the rim, then it would have a premium.
