I agree with bherring matte proofs are tough and the rim and surfaces are not enough to either disqualify a coin or authenticate one.
I would suggest that if you have a coin that you suspect , take it to a large show where you can put the coin into the hands of an expert on the matte dies or send it in asking for authentication services for a matte proof .
